This town sat over an important road junction behind the German front, used by supplies and reinforcements heading for the front at Flers, Falaise and Vire.

It was first bombed at 7am on June the 12th in the mistaken belief that a divisional headquarters was located there. It was then levelled in several attacks up to the 15th of June killing a total of 156 civilians.

It was liberated on August the 5th by VIII Corps during Operation Bluecoat.
