A rearguard left in the village of Coutances lines up against a burned out building, after surrendering to soldiers of the US 4th Armored Div. Note that the unit patch on the US GI's left shoulder has been removed by the wartime censor.

The Jeep in the forground is armed with a pintle mounted .30 cal machine gun and is equiped with a metal bar welded to the front designed to cut cables left by Germans at head height over roads, in the hopes of decapitating US troops driving Jeeps.
