ALG A-23C under construction

Engineers of the 850th Engineer Aviation Battalion (EAB), IX Engineer Command, Ninth Air Force lay prefabricated hessian (burlap) surfacing on the runway of the under construction ALG A-23C.

This landing ground was under construction between June the 30th and July the 6th 1944. The area chosen was previously used by the French Airforce and then the Luftwaffe after the fall of France. It was heavily mined by the Germans who also dug trenches over the area used by the runway, which had to be cleared first. The runway was also extended from 905m to 1400m.

Note that the wartime censor has marked out something in the background, possibly some then secret equipment such as a radar installation.
