Canadian troops distribute sugar and cigarettes to French civilians in the ruins of their town. Two of the civilians have white painted Adrian helmets of the Civil Defence, who were intended to assist the authorities in times of emergency.

Despite their civilian status many of its members did resist the German occupiers, especially in the days leading up to the liberation of Caen. Many of them lost their lives.

The troops and Universal Carrier belonged to the 7th Recce Rgt (17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars) 3rd Canadian Infantry Division.
