Carpiquet was subjected to Naval artillery strikes from battleship HMS Rodney (9 16 inch guns) and monitor HMS Roberts (2 15 inch guns)

The hangers look to be totally destroyed but are in fact largely structurally intact, with only their cladding blown off by blast.

This airfield was scheduled to be captured on June the 6th but in fact did not fall until Operation Windsor on the 9th of July, due in no small part to fanatical resistance from 12. SS-Panzer-Division 'Hitlerjugend' who often fought to the death.
