Casemate at the Gatteville coastal artilery battery

A much pockmarked casemate at the Gatteville coastal artillery battery, probably caused by shell splinters resulting from counter battery fire.

The battery housed 4 155mm guns, fortunately facing north, so they could not be brought to bear on the Utah invasion beach. The battery was eventually captured on June the 21st by the 24th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron.
