According to Didier Lodieu in his history of St Lo of 2007 these Germans were members of Grenadier Regiment 984 who came to grief at the hands of the 117th or 120th US Inf. Rgt. close to Saint-Fromond.

They appear to be a machine gun team judging by the belt of ammunition around the neck of the middle body. The bodies appear to have been searched judging by the papers strewn about, even their gas mask canisters have been opened. Also their weapons have been removed. Cigarettes are lying on the ground to the left.

The body near the camera appears to have a bullet wound in his back, above the gas canister. The fabric of his uniform is torn and there appears to be a bloodstain.

At the time of their deaths these soldiers were part of Kampfgruppe Heinz (named after the commander of Rgt. 984 Oberst Heinz). Picture taken on the 8th of July.
