While this photo is in a group of colour Photos of Canadian troops the three tanks in this photo are British made A27 Centaur or Cromwell tanks (the major difference was the type of engine) The only Canadian unit to operate tanks of this type was the 1st Centaur Battery, RCA a temporary formation in existance for only 25 days from the 6th of August. They operated the "Close Support" version of the tank with a 95mm howitzer suited to firing large HE shells for dealing with concrete emplacements and dug in infantry.

While it is not possible to see the main gun on these tanks, by far the largest user of Cromwell tanks was the British 7th Armoured Division, with their most common version armed with a high velocity 75mm gun.
