In the background is Tour (Tower) des Beaux-Regards, part of the original fortifications of the town going back to the time of Charlemagne. On the left are the ruins of the hospital.

A column of unarmed GI's march towards the camera with 3 GMC trucks behind them. The truck facing away carries the insignia of the 116th IR of the 29th US ID. The signpost points the way to "Master Rear" which was the codename of the US 1st Army.
