French 270mm shell hanging from the cliffs near Vierville-sur-Mer

This is an artillery shell from captured French stocks, the Germans hung these as makeshift mines or booby traps between Vierville and Pointe du Hoc. It is not clear if they were fused or not, and even if they were if dropping the would cause them to explode. They were still hanging there in 1945, before organised mine clearance started in the area.
