A fallen American soldier lies next to the road between d' Isigny and Saint Hilaire Petitville, near Carentan.

M. Adjutor Lecanu was a local butcher and veteran of WWI and according to his grandson was able to relate his own experiences to the sacrifice of the young American. The scene was not posed although it was recorded by a number of photographers one of which was crudely erased by the censor on the right of the picture.

Units which fought in the area between the 9th and 13th of June were the 2nd Armoured Division and the 101st Airborne division. The soldier is covered in a "cover, protective, individual" probably his own. He is not wearing the distinctive high parachute boots so could be a member of the 2nd AD.
