Napoleon Beach, being used to land supplies

Before the port facilities were repaired US Army Engineers of the 342nd General Engineer Service regiment knocked down the German anti tank wall on this beach to allow it to be used by DUKW amphibious trucks to beach cargo offloaded from shipping standing off the shore. To the left can be seen the iron railings surrounding the statue of Napoleon III on horseback pointing to the west that gives the beach its name. The beach is on one side of the place de la République, near the townhall.

The presence of both amphibious and normal land trucks reveals the presence of two US Army Quartermaster Corps units, a QM Amphibian Truck Co and a QM Truck Co. Both were probably manned by coloured troops.

On the beach are various vehicles other than DUKW's including GMC 6x6 2 1/2 tonne trucks, Chevrolet G-7113 tractors pulling semi trailers and two tracked cranes.
