Pointe du Hoc costal artillery battery after its bombardment and capture

This emplacement has been entirely destroyed in the heavy air attacks that preceded the invasion. To the left of the picture is what appears to the the breech of a large piece of artillery end on to the camera. This is puzzling since according to the accepted legend the 155mm artillery pieces had been moved out to save them from continued air attack. Either this picture is not of the Pointe du Hoc, the stories are not correct or perhaps this weapon was damaged beyond repair in an air attack and not moved with the rest of the battery.
