The station was bombed on the morning of June the 7th to prevent German reinforcements arriving on the Paris-Granville line. On June the 8th at 15:00 further damage was caused when a German munitions train was bombed.

On August the 3rd the city underwent a US artilery bombardment of 3,000 rounds before being captured on August the 4th by the 110th Infantry Regiment of the 28th Infantry Division supported by elements of the 2nd Armoured Division, but suffered from German artillery for a while longer.
