Troops of 29th US infrantry division, on Hill 122

A column of infantry from the 29th Division rest during a halt near Hill 122 on the 17th of July. Hill 122 dominated the northern approach to St Lo and as such was a key objective for the advancing Americans.

It was held by the German 352. Infanterie-Division whose artillery took a heavy toll on the approaching Americans. It was finally taken by the 134th and 137th Infantry Regiments of the 35th Division on the 16th of July after 2 days of hard fighting.
