American soldier makes good use of of a high Bocage bank.

Sergeant E. Vandenburg shelters in his foxhole dug deep into the earth of a Bocage hedgerow. Bocage bordered Norman fields and were built up over centuries by farmers ploughing the fields and casting larger stones to the side.

Sergeant E. Vandenburg was part of the 35th ID and his hole was dug to the north of St Lo cemetery.
