During the occupation this square was called place maréchal Pétain, it was promply named place général de Gaulle upon the liberation of Cherboug. The iron fountain dates from the 19th century and was named after Mr Mouchel, owner of the Le Phare de la Manche newspaper who donated 25,000 francs to the city.
