This GI has what appears to be a well chosen position at a crossroads outside Château de Commines. The Château was the HQ of the German LXXXIV Korps, commanded by General Erich Marcks. The immediate area around the HQ escaped the air bombardment of the 6th of June but the General himself ws not so lucky, dying after being targeted in his staff car on the 12th of June.

The Château was the home of Henri de Commines de Marcilly before the war, being built by his father Arthur in the 19th century. He and his six children were evicted with 3 days notice by the Germans in 1941. They built a concrete bunker in the grounds which was completed in 1942 and by 1944 had made the Château almost uninhabitable.
