Surrender of Cherbourg, June 26th 1944.

This was the scene at the entrance to General von Schlieben's command post during the surrender. German soldiers can be seen on the right apparently not under guard, perhaps they had not officially become POW's yet. A US Jeep can seen on the left in front of the half track truck. Also note various German vehicles including a Citeron saloon on the right, and German manufactured staff cars to the left.

The location of the command post was passed to the American troops by a captured German soldier. Elements of the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the 39th Infantry Regiment of the 9th US Infantry Division attacked the entrance. After some salvos from tank destroyers a POW was sent in to convince the 800 Germans inside that surrender was the most appropriate option. A company of the 2nd Bn under Captain Preston O' Gordon was the first unit to enter the bunker.

A close up view of the moment the Germans emerged with the white flag can be seen here
