The ruins of Alençon town centre.

A woman stands in the ruins of Alençon alongside a GI crouching amid the rubble on Rue de Bretagne in the approximate location of numbers of the current 58 to 62.

On the opposite side of the road are German trucks carrying barrels of fuel that have been caught in Allied artillery or air strikes and have entirely burnt out.

The signs point to Depot 110, 10 MEDICAL LABORATORY and a POL site. POL stands for Petrol, Oil (As in Diesel) and Lubricants.
