The village of Rocquancourt is all but lost under a deluge of high explosive as the US 8th Air Force is called into support ground forces with its heavy strategic bombers. A total of 1458 heavy bombers (including 570 B-24's) from both the US 8th Air Force and RAF Bomber Command were used in the initial phase of Operation Goodwood from 06:30 to 08:15 on July the 18th. The struck targets on the frontline and just beyond including German troop concentrations, transport targets and command and control locations in the areas of Soliers, Troarn, Frénouville, Hubert-Folie, Rocquancourt and Mézidon railway marshalling yard.
