C47's of the 96th Troop Carrier Squadron commanded byof Captain William R. Cooper fly over a US Navy ship off the Utah invasion beach. The 96th was a part of the 440th Troop Carrier Group, 50th Troop Carrier Wing under Lt Col. Frank X. Krebs and was based in the Exeter region around the time of D-Day.

Given that the picture is taken in daylight we can assume that they are taking part in "Mission Memphis" which landed supplies to the 101st Airborne on the 7th of June. They are headed back out to sea away from the land, and close examination shows static lines streaming below the nearest C47's, these aircraft are heading back to England after carrying out the mission. The 440th supplied 62 aircraft for this mission taking off from RAF Exeter at around 06:30.

Of note is the extreme low altitude of some of the aircraft to the bottom left of the picture, and the small dots visible on the zoomed in image which are the escorting fighter aircraft.
