On the right is the shell damaged church.

The village was first entered by a patrol composed of troops from the 17th Armored Engineer Battalion accompanied by a section of the 82nd Recon. Bn. at around 20:00 on August the 8th. They met with a rapturous reception by the inhabitants but they soon had to withdraw in the face of strong Germans units in the area. Troops of the German 10th SS Panzer Division were observing from a distance and they soon reentered the village and burned many homes in retaliation for the welcome given to the American troops.
