Barneville-Carteret from the air, looking south

In the distance at the top right we can see Barneville beach and the waters of the English Channel.

On the 18th of June 1944 at 05:00 the town was liberated from the Germans by 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division supported by tanks of the 746th Tk Bn and 899th TD Bn (SP).

This was significant for two reasons, first because it completed the isolation of the Cotentin Peninsula from the rest of France trapping the German garrison at Cherbourg and it was exactly four years to the day since the Germans captured the town in 1940.
