Burning P47 at ALG A6

burningp47atalga6.jpg

A P47 Thunderbolt probably of the 371st Fighter Group well alight after coming to grief at Advanced landing Ground 6. Note the anti-personnel fragmentation bombs under the wing, and the bent prop blades. We can summise that the accident occured on take off, since the engine was running and the bomb load was still aboard. The other cluster of bombs must have been well heated at this point, not to mention the hundreds of .50 calibre rounds in the burning wing, underlining the dangerous nature of operational accidents.
