The railway network passing through Flers was bombed during the day of June the 5th by the USAAF 8th air force, then by the RAF on the night of June the 6th. This was part of the Allied plan to seal off the Normandy battle area from the rest of France delaying the Germans from reinforcing their troops in the area.

108 civilians died in the two attacks, mainly in the night attack.

The town was finally captured from the Germans on the 17th of August by the British 11th Armoured Division.
