A Jeep is seen about to pass through a checkpoint manned by a single US soldier on Rue de la Poterne, St Lo.

To the left is the entrance to a underground hospital built into the cliff by the Germans. Construction commenced in March 1943 and was not yet complete by the time St Lo was captured from the Germans in July 1944.

However it was used, with the consent of the Germans, to shelter sick civilians from St Lo's normal hospitals that were damaged during the bombing of the 6th of June, and it also later treated other civilians wounded on that night and during later attacks. As many as 700 civilians ended up sheltering there by the 9th of June.
