Remains of German motor transport ravaged by combat with US troops.

Three GI's survey the wreckage of German transport in Mortain with the Mortain train station in the background. They were destroyed by the 57mm AT guns of Platoon Sergean Miller Rhyne (120th Inf Regiment, 30th ID) and three 3-inch AT guns of 1st Platoon, A Co, 823rd TD Bn all under the command of Lieutenant T. Springfield who had positioned himself on the hill to the north of the railway station.

The vehicles are not combat vehicles, they probably were unlucky to run into the American position near the road after assuming there were no Allied troops in the area.

The vehicle nearest the camera is the burned remains of a Opel Blitz 3 ton truck with a Schwimmwagen, a Kübelwagen and a captured Jeep beyond it. In the distance is a Sdkfz 251 halftrack bearing the markings of the 1.SS-Panzer-Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler.
