This view of one of the open emplacements of the Gatteville costal artillery battery shows the effect of Allied bombardment that has wrecked the surrounding area. The battery consisted of 6 guns, 3 in enclosed casemates and 3 in open emplacements like the one shown above.
The battery was orientated to the north and as such played little part in opposing the landings on Utah beach to the east.
The area was liberated by 24th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron of the 4th Cavalry Group on the 21st of June by which time the Germans had evacuated 2 of the guns in open emplacements.
